  [摘要]外贸函电英语作为专门用途英语的一个分支有自己独特的语言特点,本文从外贸函电英语的用语特点入手,用实例浅析外贸函电的翻译策略和技巧。

  引言

  外贸英语函电是涉外商业活动中开展业务的专业性书面记录,是国际商务交往中沟通联络、处理业务和交流信息最常用的一种方式。

  一、英语函电的用语特点

  (一)语言规范严谨

  外贸函电是对外贸易中买卖双方交易的依据,它涉及金融、运输、法律等多方面的专业知识,具有法律约束力,因此语言必须规范严谨,使用正式用语。

  (二)语气委婉礼貌

  外贸函电是国际贸易中一种重要的交往手段,注重语气的委婉和礼貌不仅可以在彼此间营造一种友好的合作气氛,往往更容易促进贸易的最终达成或谅解。

  (三)内容简洁精练

  在国际贸易中,要求语言精练准确、语气直接明了,要使用熟悉的词汇,尽量避免意义不明确的单词。

  二、英语函电的翻译策略

  外贸英语函电作为一种特殊的公文文体,翻译时要遵照“忠实”的翻译标准。

  (一)专业术语的使用

  外贸英语函电作为国际贸易业务操作中主要的交流手段,要求用词准确,表意清晰,避免歧义,所以大量使用专业术语被用来描述贸易活动的磋商、报关、保险、运输等各个环节,例如:shipping advice装船通知;commercial invoice商业发票;insurance policy保险单;sales confirmation售货确认书;packing list装箱单;a sight draft即期汇票,等等。这些贸易术语含义清楚明确,频繁出现在商务信函中。

  (二)习惯用语的使用

  外贸英语信函是正式信函,在长期的贸易往来中,一些句型法被逐渐地固定下来,形成了信函固定用语,用以表达信函的正式和礼貌,例如:It would be appreciated/We shall appreciate it如果贵方……,我们将不胜感激;We are pleased to inform you/Notice is hereby given that特此奉告;We have received your letter of/we admit receipt of贵方来函收悉;Looking forward to your early reply 盼回复。

  (三)缩略语的使用

  国际贸易组织机构缩略语。如,WTO,世界贸易组织;IMF,国际货币基金组织;COSCO,中国远洋运输公司;ISO,国际标准化组织。

  贸易术语缩略语。如,L/C,信用证;FOB,离岸价格;CIF,到岸价格;D/A,承兑交单;D/P,付款交单;P/L,装箱单;B/L,提单;LCL/FCL,拼装或整拆,等等。

  信函缩略语。比如,Re,事由;C.C.副本抄送;Encls 附件;P.S. 附言;C/O,转交,等等。

  这些国际贸易通用的缩略语规定交货付款方式,明确交易双方的责任义务等,表述简洁、准确、一目了然。

  (四)古体词的使用

  外贸英语英文信函作为一种正式文体,语言庄重、严谨,较少使用口语化的词语。使用古语词可以避免用词重复和文句过长,使信函语句简练、准确、有说服力。函电中常使用一些here、there、where等副词分别加上与in、on、to、of、at、by、after、upon、under、with等一个或几个介词,共同构成公文语副词。例如:hereafter今后、自此;hereby特此;thereafter此后,后来;thereby因此、由此;whereto对于那个;whereas鉴于,等等。这些此类古体词出现在函电中,使行文更具法律语体色彩,严谨正式。

  (五)介词短语的使用

  外贸英语信函中常有大量介词出现,搭配不同,意义也不同,在外贸函电翻译中,往往把英语的介词转换成为汉语的动词。例如:

  (1)We should advise you to get in touch with them for your requirements.建议贵方与他们取得联系,洽购所需商品。

  在这里,为了完整地表达句子含义,依据介词“for”的上下文对其内涵进行引申,将介词for翻译成汉语的动词“洽购”。

  (2)In compliance with your request,we are sending you,under separate cover,our latest catalogue and price list covering our export range.遵照贵方要求,随函附上最新的出口商品目录和报价单。

  在这里,介词短语in compliance翻译成汉语的动词“遵照”比较符合汉语的表达习惯。

  三、结束语

  作为国际贸易中的主要磋商方式,只有清楚地了解外贸英语函电特征,熟练地掌握相关的翻译技巧,才能准确地捕捉商务信息,促进国际贸易顺利发展。
